What to expect in your first martial arts class

First Martial arts classes

Are you someone who wants to start their martial arts journey?

If you are, then congratulations! It doesn’t matter if you’re interested in learning self-defense, improving your fitness, or just exploring a new hobby, there’s a martial art out there for everyone. But if you’re new to the world of martial arts you must be wondering what classes look like.

How does training go? Will you spar with other classmates already? What do you bring?

Stop getting nervous about your first class because in this blog post, we’ll walk you through what to expect in your first martial arts class and help you feel prepared and excited for your new adventure.

Are you ready?

Here are some of the things you should expect before you step into the dojo:

  1. Training gear – Before you even set foot in the dojo or gym, you’ll want to make sure you’re dressed appropriately. Don’t forget to bring your training gear with you so that you’ll be safe when you train with your other classmates.
  2. Warm-up – Your first class will likely start with a warm-up to get your muscles and joints loose and limber. Don’t worry if you can’t keep up with the movements, one step at a time. You’ll get there too!
  3. Technique instruction – Once you’re warmed up, the instructor will likely introduce some basic techniques or movements from the martial art you’re studying. This may include strikes, blocks, kicks, or grappling techniques.
  4. Partner drills – Of course you’ll spend most of your time with a training partner so choose which friend/classmate you want. This is where you’ll have the opportunity to practice the techniques you’ve learned in a more dynamic and realistic setting. Don’t worry if you don’t have a partner – the instructor will pair you up with someone who is at a similar level and will help you learn and grow.
  5. Have fun and make friends – Finally, don’t forget to have fun while training. We’re sure that you’ll make a lot of friends on your martial arts journey.

Now you know what to expect in your first martial arts class. Of course, every instructor and gym is different, so your experience may vary slightly, but these are the basics that most classes will cover. The most important thing is to come with an open mind and a willingness to learn and grow.
